Polar Express

Year 1B have read the story “The Polar Express” and have begun to build a train within the classroom.  The railway is beginning to take shape across the desks within the classroom.  In the coming weeks, we are hoping to write letters to Santa, create some lists, boarding passes, design our carriages, and create some engineer or conductor hats.  We are all so excited about the huge creation that is starting to evolve within the classroom.

“The Polar Express” is a great story about Billy who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so because of his family’s insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is simply a myth.  However, on Christmas Eve, a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night and takes him on an adventure to the North Pole to visit Santa.  We all enjoyed the story so much that we are going to use hole punchers to punch out the word “believe” like the train conductor in the story.

Our focus will then be on believing in others and ourselves.  Believing in ourselves is a major part of learning and this adventure like the train journey can be surprising, exciting, scary at times and in the end so very, very delightful.
