DCO Hero Flags

The Defence Community Organisation recently celebrated National Families Week by displaying a huge array of “Hero Flags” at both North Lakes and Mitchelton libraries.  Members of the Australian Defence Force and their family members were asked to create a flag symbolising what they thought constituted a “Hero Family”.  It is the family members – mums, dads, husbands, wives, partners, children, step-children, grandparents, brothers and sisters – who support the serving member and who deserve to think of themselves as ‘Hero Families’ because they support our serving ‘Heroes’ (military servicemen and women.)
Defence family members from Prep to Staff created wonderful flags.  Most used felt pens, but some also glued glitter and sequins, ribbons and stars while one clever young man sewed some beads onto his flag.  Everyone enjoyed this activity and it was good to spend some time discussing how each and every member of a Defence Family makes a positive contribution to our nation’s defence force.
