Dear Families,

World Teachers Day: This Friday, 30 October, is World Teachers’ Day. Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Teachers’ Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex society. Bray Park teachers could not achieve what they do without the support of our parents, the efforts of students and the contribution of the wider community.   I encourage parents and students, to take a few minutes to say “thank-you” to the teachers of Bray Park. They are a dedicated, caring and hard-working team who do their very best to provide every opportunity for Bray Park children to ‘Believe, Achieve and Succeed’!

New Parents Induction Morning : On Tuesday 3 November from 9 -11 am, the new parents induction session will be held in the school assembly hall. Parents will hear from a range of key people in our community on several topics ranging from curriculum and learning offerings, Responsible Behaviour Plans, the Special Education Programs (SEP) available in our school, booklists and uniforms, the P & C, Outside Schools Hours Care representatives and more. If you can’t make it Tuesday morning an abridged version will be presented at 5pm.

Bray Park Achievers: At last week’s assembly, there were a very large number of students who received a range of certificates. This week, in addition to the usual array of certificates handed out, we will be issuing Student of the Month Certificates. Recipients of this award receive a wide brimmed Champions Hat as our school’s way of saying ‘thank-you’ for demonstrating responsible and positive behaviours.

Past students scoop awards!   Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of attending the Awards Night at Bray Park High. A large number of students who received awards are past Bray Park primary students, and it is immensely satisfying to know that they are doing so well. The partnerships that our two schools have established are crucial towards ensuring that continuity of learning experiences is occurring and forming a platform for further success in high school.

School Enrolments 2010: If families are transferring from Bray Park at the end of the year, please advise school office staff. A signed written note will be satisfactory, as this enables us to form a reasonable prediction of enrolments.   Similarly, if families are intending to enrol with us in 2010, and have not yet done so, please do so as soon as you can. Schools are required to submit draft numbers to the District Office, and this information is critical for staffing which in turn, affects class sizes etc.

Message from Bas:   Be polite to all people you encounter.

Weekly checks are important:   A reminder to parents that it’s prudent to conduct regular checks for head lice and commence appropriate treatment if detected. The school community does have 2 parent volunteer contacts who can assist families, should they require assistance. To access the volunteers, contact the school and leave a return phone number.

Thought for the week:   Use what talents you possess. The woods would be silent if no birds sang except those that sang best…… Henry Van Dyke

Chappy Chat:
Please fill in and return the chaplaicy consent form if you haven't already. The form is available on the  school website (brayparkss.eq.edu.au) under the Support, Chaplain section.

School chaplaincy has now established itself as a vital component of this schools welfare services, and a recent research study on school chaplaincy found that 98% of school principals who have chaplains in their school want funding to continue. The federal government is currently reviewing chaplaincy funding and whether they will continue their support. If their funding is discontinued, our chaplaincy services may have to cease operating. I would need to raise $20,000 for chaplaincy to continue 2 days a week at Bray Park - a big ask!
This will have an incredibly negative impact on our children in schools who are looking for an independent, trusted  friend who can help them navigate through life’s issues.

I’m asking you to take the time to contact our local federal MP to inform them of your support for school chaplaincy. Simply use the web
link: http://support.schoolchaplaincy.org.au, and follow the prompts to spend a few minutes showing your support.

Chappy Award winners last week were Georgia Olsen & Georgia Gill

Mr G - School Chaplain.

Sport:  Congratulations to Shelby Hunter of 7B who finished 2nd in the 100m, 200m and Relay at the Qld Athletics championships last week. Shelby will now compete in the National Athletics Championships at the end of November. We wish Shelby all the best!!

The Interhouse Swimming Carnival letter and permission forms have now been distributed to all Year 4 – 7 students. The cost is $5.00 and the day is always full of fun and laughter. Come and enjoy a swim, have a sausage sizzle or two and have a laugh at the Staff Relay race. See if Mr Bland can finally beat Mr Hovey!!

A very big thanks
Mr Waugh

Library:     Premier's Reading Challenge:
Congratulations to the 31 students who completed the Reading Challenge this year.  Certificates will be handed out on parade this week.

Reader's and Writer's Club: Don't forget that we have Reader's and Writer's Club running through the library.  Several of our younger readers have recently received their awards on parade.  If you want to know more, drop in and see Mrs Moritz or Mrs Butterworth.

Student Reviews: Upper school students have been volunteering to review books for their peers.  They not only get to read some books that they may not have looked at before, they also get to influence the reading selections of their friends.  Reviews are on display as you walk into the library.  Ask for assistance if you would like to participate or are having trouble finding one of the reviewed books.

Book Fair: Keep saving those pennies.  Book Fair is coming soon.  Starts 9th November.
